This instructional material was developed to provide the students with the foundation of probability theory and statistical concepts, including random variables and their probability distributions, for research applications. It is suitable for the course that introduces

  • basic probability
  • Bayes' theorem
  • random variables
  • discrete and continuous distributions
  • bivariate and multivariate distributions and their applications

These are two sets of powerpoint slides and some notes to explain the intent of the individual slides.  The topic is a general introduction to probability.  The ultimate goal of these slides is to get students to understand why we need to test the null hypothesis and not the hypothesis of interest.
